1. About this policy
This Privacy Policy describes how BioScribe (“we”, “us”) handles information when you visit https://bioscribe.name.ng/ and use its academic calculators, study planning tools and educational resources. It describes how the website works at the time of writing. Please read it together with our Terms of Use and Disclaimer.
At a glance
- The website uses Google Analytics to measure visits, and Jetpack and Rank Math run on the WordPress site. It does not currently display advertising.
- The calculators work in your browser. The numbers, scores, dates and text you enter in them are not sent to BioScribe’s servers.
- Three tools can keep data in your own browser, and only on your device. They are listed in section 3.
- Pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so Google receives a request from your browser (section 6).
- If you use the contact form, your message is sent to us by email (section 4).
2. Information we may collect
Information you send us
If you use the contact form, you provide your name, email address, a subject, a reason for contact and your message. Visitors do not need an account to use the tools.
Technical information
When your browser requests a page, it sends technical details to the web server, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages requested and the date and time. These details are normally recorded in server logs by the website’s hosting and WordPress systems. We also use Google Analytics to measure how the website is used (see section 6).
Usage information
Google Analytics collects information about how visitors use the website, such as the pages viewed, how visitors arrive, approximate location, device and browser type, and how long they stay. It is reported to us as statistics.
Information stored in your own browser
Some tools can keep entries in your browser’s storage so they are there when you return. This stays on your device. See section 3.
Information processed by third-party services
Google Analytics, Google Fonts, Jetpack, Rank Math and the services that host the website and deliver email may process information as described in sections 4 to 6. If we add advertising in future, it will be described here first.
3. Information entered into the tools
The calculators and planners run as JavaScript in your browser. The values, dates, scores, schedules and pasted text you enter are processed on your device and are not sent to our servers or to any third party by the tools. The tools do not require you to sign in. Analytics, described in section 6, measures visits to pages. The tools themselves do not send the values you enter to it.
Three tools can save entries in your browser’s local storage on your device:
| Tool | What can be saved in your browser | How it is saved and removed |
|---|---|---|
| Exam Countdown | Exams you add: name, subject, date, time, time zone, location and notes | Saved as you add exams. Delete exams one by one, use Clear All, or clear your browser data. |
| Academic Date Calculator | Events and timeline milestones you enter | Saved as you use the Days Until Exam and Timeline modes. Use Delete Saved Data, or clear your browser data. |
| Study Schedule Generator | Your form entries and generated schedule | Saved only when you choose Save Schedule. Use Delete Saved Data, or clear your browser data. |
The other tools do not save anything. Buttons such as Copy, Print and Download CSV work on your device. If you use a Share button where your device offers one, your device’s sharing feature passes the text to the app you choose, and that app’s own privacy practices then apply.
Your browser, device or extensions may keep their own records, for example autofill or history, which we do not control. Because saved entries live in your browser, anyone using the same browser profile may be able to see them, so avoid saving sensitive information on a shared device.
4. The contact form
What it asks for. Your name, email address, a subject, a reason for contact and a message.
Why. To read your message, understand what it is about and reply to you.
How it is handled. When you press Send Message, the form sends your entries to the website’s server, which emails them to the inbox we use for enquiries. The email is delivered through the website’s email service. The contact form does not keep your message in the website’s database, but copies remain in that inbox and with the email service until deleted.
Spam protection. The form includes a hidden field and a timing check, and it keeps a short-lived counter of how many messages came from one connection, stored as a scrambled value rather than a readable IP address, for up to one hour.
The form only tells you your message was sent when the server accepts it for delivery. If the page says the form is unavailable, no message has been sent. Please do not include passwords, student account credentials or other sensitive information. To ask us to correct or delete a message you sent, contact us as described in section 15.
5. Cookies and browser storage
The website uses Google Analytics, which uses cookies or similar technologies to recognise a browser and measure visits. Jetpack and the WordPress and hosting systems may also set cookies, for example for statistics, security or administrator login, depending on which features are enabled. The calculators themselves do not use cookies, and we have not enabled advertising cookies at the time of writing.
Separately from cookies, three tools use your browser’s local storage as described in section 3. You can manage cookies and stored site data in your browser settings, and clearing site data removes anything the tools saved. If you do not want Google Analytics to measure your visits, Google provides the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
6. Analytics and third-party services
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the website is used, for example which pages are visited and how visitors find the site. It collects usage information such as pages viewed, approximate location and device and browser details, using cookies or similar technologies, and Google reports it to us as statistics. See Google’s Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. You can opt out with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Jetpack
Jetpack, provided by Automattic, is a WordPress plugin that connects the website to WordPress.com and offers features that may include site statistics, security and performance tools. Depending on which Jetpack features are enabled, it may process information about visitors such as IP address, pages viewed, referring site and device details. See Jetpack’s privacy information and Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
Rank Math
Rank Math is a WordPress search engine optimization plugin. We use it to manage search-related information such as page titles, descriptions and sitemaps. See Rank Math’s privacy policy.
Google Fonts
Each page loads its fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). To do this, your browser makes a request to Google, which receives technical information such as your IP address and browser details. See the Google Fonts privacy FAQ.
Hosting, WordPress and email
The website uses a WordPress installation, a hosting provider and an email service. They process information such as server logs and contact-form email so the website can run. Each is subject to its own privacy terms.
7. Advertising and Google AdSense
The website does not display advertising at the time of writing. We may introduce advertising in future, such as Google AdSense. If we do, advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show and measure ads, and ads may be personalized depending on your region and settings. We would then update this policy before or when advertising starts, and add any consent choices the law requires.
Information about how Google uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can manage Google ad personalization at adssettings.google.com.
8. How we use information
- To operate, maintain and secure the website.
- To respond to messages sent through the contact form.
- To find and fix technical problems, including by reviewing server logs.
- To protect the website and its visitors from spam and abuse.
- To understand how the website is used, and to improve the tools and guides using analytics and feedback you choose to send us.
- To meet legal obligations that apply to us.
9. Sharing information
We may share information with the service providers that help us run the website and understand how it is used, such as Google (Analytics and Fonts), Automattic (Jetpack), Rank Math, and the hosting, WordPress and email services described above. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or when needed to protect the website, its visitors or our rights. We describe each service in plain language in this policy, and we will update it if our practices change.
10. Retention and security
We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes above, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. We have not fixed specific retention periods. Analytics data is kept for the period set in our analytics settings and by the provider’s own policies. Contact-form emails stay in our inbox until we delete them. Entries saved in your browser stay there until you delete them.
The website is served from an address that begins with https, which encrypts data between your browser and the server, and we use reasonable measures to protect the information we handle. No website or email system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Your choices and rights
You can contact us to ask what personal information we hold from your messages, or to ask us to correct or delete it. You can manage cookies and stored site data in your browser settings, and you can use the Delete and Clear buttons in the tools described in section 3. Depending on where you live and the law that applies, you may have additional rights over your personal information. We will consider requests in line with the law that applies to them, and we do not promise a particular response time here.
12. Children’s privacy
BioScribe offers academic tools and resources for students and other learners. The website is not designed to collect personal information from children, and we do not ask visitors for their age. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has submitted personal information through the contact form, contact us as described in section 15 and we will review the request and delete the information where appropriate.
13. External links
The website may link to other websites. We do not control them, and their own privacy policies and practices apply once you leave BioScribe.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the website, its services or the legal requirements change, for example if we add advertising or change the analytics we use. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it was last reviewed and published.
15. Contact us about privacy
For privacy questions or requests, email hello@bioscribe.name.ng or use the contact page. Please do not include passwords or other sensitive information.
